Research & Development

Innovation as a Strategic Asset — Funding the Future, Building What Comes Next.

RGB Holdings treats research and development not as a cost centre, but as a primary driver of long-term competitive advantage. In the sectors we operate — defence technology, clean energy, precision agriculture, advanced digital infrastructure, and industrial telecommunications — the pace of change is accelerating. The organisations that lead are those who invest ahead of the curve, build proprietary capability, and create the conditions for genuine innovation to reach commercial deployment.

This page sets out how RGB Holdings funds, structures, and supports research and development activity — both internally and through our investment in external innovators, early-stage businesses, and strategic research partners.

01 — OUR R&D PHILOSOPHY

Why RGB Holdings Invests in R&D

Our investment mandate extends beyond acquiring stakes in existing businesses. RGB Holdings actively funds and co-develops new technologies, supports re-engineering of established systems, and builds proprietary intellectual property that creates sustainable competitive advantage across all three of our divisions — RGB Red (Defence & Security), RGB Green (Sustainable Energy, Land & Agriculture), and RGB Blue (Digital, Telecom & Advanced Technologies).

We take a long-term view. Innovation cycles in our target sectors span years, not months — from early-stage concept through to regulatory clearance, commercial deployment, and lifecycle evolution. RGB Holdings is structured and capitalised to participate at every stage of this cycle.

Long-horizon funding

We fund R&D with patient capital — committing to programmes that may take three to seven years to reach commercial maturity.

All R&D investment is anchored in the real commercial and operational needs of our three divisions and their clients.

Where we co-fund or lead development, we secure appropriate IP rights — building a portfolio that compounds in value over time.

We seek the best ideas wherever they originate — from universities, start-ups, independent engineers, and established technology businesses.

Our R&D investments must meet the same responsible investment standards as our broader capital deployment.

02 — R&D FOCUS AREAS

Where We Invest in Innovation

RGB Holdings directs its R&D funding and partnership activity across six primary focus areas, each aligned with the operational priorities of our divisions and the long-term structural trends shaping the global economy.

Defence & Security Technology

RGB Red drives our R&D investment in defence-grade systems, secure communications, and critical infrastructure protection. Our focus areas include:

Clean Energy & Agricultural Innovation

RGB Green’s R&D programme targets the technologies that will define the next generation of renewable energy deployment and sustainable food production:

Digital, Telecom & Advanced Technology

RGB Blue represents the largest single concentration of our R&D activity, reflecting the pace of change in digital infrastructure, AI, and industrial connectivity:

03 — RESEARCH PROJECT FUNDING

04 — START-UP & EARLY-STAGE INVESTMENT

Investing in the Innovators of Tomorrow

RGB Holdings actively seeks investment opportunities in early-stage and growth-stage technology businesses whose work advances capabilities within our three divisions. We do not operate a conventional venture capital model — we invest strategically, as a long-term partner, in businesses where our operational expertise, market relationships, and geographic reach can accelerate progress and create enduring value.

What We Look For in Start-Up Partners

  • A validated technical concept with defensible intellectual property — or a credible pathway to IP protection
  • A founding team with genuine domain expertise and the operational capacity to execute
  • A product or platform with clear commercial application in defence, energy, agriculture, or digital technology
  • Alignment with the long-term structural trends driving our investment thesis — resilience, decarbonisation, digital transformation, and food security
  • Openness to strategic partnership — not just capital, but operational integration and market development support

What RGB Holdings Brings to Early-Stage Businesses

Strategic Investment

Equity participation at seed, Series A, or growth stage — structured to align with the business’s trajectory and our long-term value creation approach.

Introduction to RGB Holdings’ government, defence, enterprise, and institutional networks across the UK, India, and the Middle East — markets that are typically difficult for early-stage businesses to penetrate independently.

Access to RGB Holdings’ project management, engineering, compliance, and commercial expertise — particularly relevant for businesses navigating defence procurement or regulated energy markets.

Where appropriate, we co-develop technology with investee businesses — combining our domain knowledge with their technical innovation to produce solutions optimised for our target markets.

Support in structuring IP protection, filing strategy, and commercial licensing — ensuring that innovation is properly protected and monetised.

As investee businesses develop and require additional capital, RGB Holdings can provide follow-on investment or facilitate introduction to our co-investment partners and institutional networks.
