The most enduring competitive advantages in our target sectors are not acquired — they are built. RGB Holdings invests at the earliest stages of the technology development lifecycle because we believe that the right idea, in the right hands, with the right support at the right moment, can create category-defining businesses and technologies that shape industries for decades.
Our early-stage investment programme is not a conventional venture fund. We are a strategic investor — one that brings deep sector expertise, operating infrastructure, regulatory knowledge, and global market relationships alongside our capital. For the innovators and founders we back, this combination is often more valuable than the investment itself.
We invest only in technologies and businesses that are directly relevant to our three divisions. We are not generalist early-stage investors. Our conviction comes from operational depth — we understand the problems these innovations are solving, and we know the customers who will buy them.
We invest for the duration of a company's growth journey — from seed through to commercial scale. We do not seek quick exits. We build alongside founders, providing capital, resource, and strategic guidance at every stage of development.
Our most distinctive contribution to early-stage businesses is not financial. It is access — to markets, to government procurement networks, to co-investors, and to the operational and technical expertise of the broader RGB Holdings Group.
RGB Holdings allocates dedicated capital to fund research projects that advance the frontiers of our target sectors. This funding operates through a structured framework, enabling us to support everything from early-stage academic inquiry to applied industrial research programmes with commercial deployment timelines.
Research with a defined commercial or operational application within one of our three divisions. Funded under joint development or co-funding agreements.
Structured funding for new technical concepts requiring validation before full investment commitment. Includes prototyping, modelling, and feasibility trials.
Collaborative funding of university research programmes aligned with our sectoral priorities. Typically structured as multi-year research grants or KTP-style partnerships.
Co-investment alongside Innovate UK, DSTL, and other national R&D funding bodies. RGB Holdings contributes private capital and operational expertise.
Funding for live demonstration of developed technologies in operational environments — enabling market validation and procurement readiness.
RGB Holdings’ early-stage investment is concentrated in six high-priority technology areas — chosen for their alignment with our divisions’ strategic direction and the long-term structural trends driving demand in our target markets.
Operational intelligence for defence and security; agricultural crop analytics and yield prediction; predictive maintenance for energy infrastructure; anomaly detection for cyber security.
Proprietary sensor networks for industrial environments; edge computing platforms for energy and utilities; connected farm systems for precision agriculture; smart city data platforms.
Private 5G and BLOS communications for defence and industrial use; resilient network architectures for critical infrastructure; secure communications for government and defence.
Battery and hydrogen energy storage; grid management and smart grid optimisation software; renewable energy performance monitoring; low-carbon building energy systems.
Precision farming hardware and software; soil health and water management systems; autonomous farm machinery; crop intelligence and climate-adaptive growing systems.
OT and IT convergence security platforms; zero-trust architectures for critical infrastructure; AI-driven threat detection; supply chain cyber resilience tools.
Not every opportunity involves a new technology. RGB Holdings also supports the re-engineering of existing systems — modernising legacy infrastructure, integrating new capabilities into established platforms, and applying current technology to persistent operational challenges. We make this expertise available to technology partners, government clients, and co-investors engaged in capability development or system lifecycle management.
Upgrading legacy communications, surveillance, and access control infrastructure to current operational standards — including the integration of cyber-resilient architectures into older OT environments.
Supporting the retrofit and digitalisation of existing energy assets — including grid infrastructure, generation facilities, and distribution networks — to meet the operational and regulatory demands of the energy transition.
Enabling traditional farming operations to adopt precision agriculture, irrigation automation, and data intelligence systems — bridging the gap between conventional practice and agri-tech capability.
Re-architecting industrial communications infrastructure to support private 5G, edge computing, and IoT integration — essential for smart infrastructure programmes and Industry 4.0 deployments.
Modernising legacy software systems, data platforms, and enterprise applications for government, defence, and infrastructure clients — improving resilience, interoperability, and performance.
The RGB Holdings early-stage programme is distinguished from conventional venture investment by the depth and practicality of the non-financial support we provide. For businesses in complex, regulated, or government-facing sectors, this support is often the critical accelerant.
RGB Holdings has established relationships with procurement teams, programme managers, and decision-makers across defence, energy, and government digital transformation programmes in the UK, India, and the Middle East. For early-stage businesses, this access can compress sales cycles by years.
Our team understands the accreditation, compliance, and regulatory requirements of defence, energy, and critical infrastructure markets. We guide portfolio businesses through the frameworks that are often the biggest barrier to government and regulated enterprise contracts.
Portfolio businesses can access RGB Holdings’ engineering expertise — from system architecture review to prototyping support, testing environment access, and technical due diligence for commercial conversations.
RGB Holdings maintains active relationships with institutional investors, infrastructure funds, and sovereign-linked entities who share our long-term, sector-focused investment approach. We facilitate introductions when portfolio businesses require capital syndication.
Our offices in London, India, and the Middle East provide in-country commercial and regulatory intelligence, partner introductions, and practical operational support for portfolio businesses seeking to expand geographically.
For businesses whose technology requires adaptation for deployment in large-scale or government-grade environments, RGB Holdings provides re-engineering and systems integration expertise — bridging the gap between a working prototype and a commercially deployable solution.
RGB Holdings’ early-stage investment is concentrated in six high-priority technology areas — chosen for their alignment with our divisions’ strategic direction and the long-term structural trends driving demand in our target markets.
A genuine innovation — not an incremental feature. Ideally with demonstrated proof-of-concept and a credible pathway to IP protection. We assess technical risk honestly.
Deep domain expertise, intellectual honesty about what is known and unknown, and the commercial instinct to translate technical capability into market traction.
A specific, identifiable problem in one of our target sectors — with a customer base that has both the need and the purchasing authority to buy the solution.
Evidence that the market is ready for the innovation — whether through regulatory drivers, procurement signals, or structural changes in the competitive landscape.
A clear, milestone-based funding requirement — with a credible plan for what each tranche of capital will prove and how it advances the business toward commercial self-sufficiency.
A founding team that understands the environmental, social, and governance implications of their technology — and is committed to developing it responsibly.
RGB Holdings reviews all credible early-stage investment and R&D funding proposals submitted to our innovation team. We are responsive, transparent about our criteria, and — when we cannot invest — constructive in explaining why. All submissions are treated in strict confidence.
What to Include in Your Proposal:
A clear description of what you have built, what problem it solves, and what makes it genuinely novel. Accessible language preferred — we do not require jargon.
Current TRL or equivalent. What has been demonstrated, what remains to be proven, and the key technical risks you are managing.
The specific sector, customer type, and geography you are addressing — and evidence that customers in that market have a real, funded need.
Who is building this, their relevant background, and any advisers or academic partnerships that validate the technical approach.
How much you are seeking, what it will achieve, and the structure you are proposing — equity, grant, co-development, or a combination.
Any environmental, social, or governance dimensions to the technology or its application — positive or negative — and how you are managing them.
All submissions are reviewed by our divisional R&D leads and investment team. We aim to respond to all complete submissions within ten working days of receipt. RGB Holdings does not use or share submitted intellectual property without the proposer’s written consent.
